Laranjal Guest Ranch is located in the northernmost section of the state of Parana, in a region known as the Norte Pioneiro (Pioneer's North). This area is part of the Atlantic Rainforest (Mata Atlantica). In the 1920's coffee growing spread into this region and the forest was cleared and coffe planted on all suitable land.
We have a document which shows the transfer of about 650 alqueires (some 4000 acres) to our family in 1928. From that time on coffee was planted in the fertile, frost free, high areas and pasture was formed in the low lying areas. A good portin was left as forest and used for the extraction of hardwoods to build the necessary houses and buildings for a large coffee plantation.
Over the years the property was divided
among heirs and some parts were sold off. As a result we presently
own about 750 acres of the original.
Much has changed and coffee is no longer
of such importance at Laranjal but there are reminders of its glorious
past everywhere. We presently have only about 50,000 coffee trees
compared to almost 1,000,000 in the 1970's.
